Had them out after the back steps started going soft underfoot. He came and looked properly before quoting anything, and told me the structure underneath was still sound — so it ended up a smaller job than I had braced myself for. Island Creek Coal built these houses to repeating plans across the numbered camps, which means the trim was repeating too. Same baseboard height, same casing, same corner blocks where they were used. Nearly a century on, that is a real advantage: when a section is missing or damaged, the original is usually still intact somewhere close by to measure from.
