Had them out after the back steps started going soft underfoot. He came and looked properly before quoting anything, and told me the structure underneath was still sound — so it ended up a smaller job than I had braced myself for. Turned up when he said he would, cleaned up after himself, and the price at the end was the price we agreed. Not much more you can ask for.

Called on a Tuesday and had someone out the same week. What I appreciated most was being told straight what needed doing now and what could safely wait until spring. No pressure and no trying to talk me into the bigger version of the job. It has held up fine through the winter since.

The quote came through itemised and the final bill matched it, which has honestly not been my experience with everyone around here. They worked around an awkward driveway without once making it my problem, and left the place tidier than they found it. Would have them back.

Fair price, showed up on time, tidy work. No complaints.

How It Works

From first call to finished work — no surprises in between.

  1. A phone held over a workbench beside a notepad sketch of a deck marked up with dimensions — 16 by 12 feet, 36 inch rail, 2x8 pressure-treated joists at 16 inches on centre — with a tape measure and carpenter's pencil alongside

    Step 1

    Tell us about the project

Call, text, or send a message with what you're looking to build or repair. No form to fill in and no call centre — it comes straight to us, and you'll get a real answer about whether it's something we do.

  2. Kneeling under a deck to inspect the framing, using a flashlight and a probe to test a rotted band board where it meets a support post

    Step 2

Send photos or schedule a look

A few photos are often enough to tell us what we're dealing with. Where it isn't — anything structural, anything hidden underneath — we'll come out and look properly before quoting rather than guessing from the kerb.

  3. Going through a printed itemised quote line by line at a kitchen table, a tape measure and carpenter's pencil set down beside it

    Step 3

    Get a clear quote

You get a written quote that itemises the work, so you can see what you're paying for and what you aren't. If we think part of it isn't worth doing, we'll say so. No pressure and no surprises at the end.

  4. A finished pressure-treated deck with railing and steps on a West Virginia home, being walked through on completion, wooded hillside behind

    Step 4

    We build it right

We turn up when we said we would, work clean, and haul the offcuts away with us. The job gets built to last in this climate — and we'll walk it with you before we call it finished.

Not sure what yours needs?

General Home Carpentry in Williamson, WV — common questions

Straight answers to what we get asked most.

Is there a minimum job size?

No, there isn't. A half-hour repair is something we'll happily come and look at. Distance is a bigger factor on very small jobs than the work itself, so if you're further out we may suggest scheduling you alongside other work heading in that direction.

How much do small carpentry jobs cost in West Virginia?

Small jobs get quoted the same way as big ones — we look, then give you a written number. The one thing worth knowing is that batching several small jobs into a single visit costs considerably less than separate call-outs.

Do you do accessibility work like grab rails and ramps?

Yes, and it's a growing share of what we do. Grab rails must be fastened into framing rather than drywall anchors. We're happy to walk a house and give you a priority order if you're arranging work for a family member.

Can you finish a project another contractor abandoned?

Yes. We just need to see it before quoting, because partial work varies enormously — sometimes it's a straight continuation and sometimes the first task is undoing something that was done wrong.

Will you fit materials I've already bought?

Yes, that's normal. Just check sizes and handing before you buy, and send a photo if you're unsure what to order.

Do you do electrical or plumbing?

No. Those go to licensed trades and we coordinate around them. We handle the carpentry, which on most projects is the majority of the work.

Do you build fences and gates?

Yes. The main thing on a hillside lot is getting the posts set properly — adequate depth, right material, and gravel at the base for drainage. Posts straight into soil is why so many gates around here lean after a few years.

Can you look at something and tell me if it's worth fixing?

That's a normal call and the visit is free. Sometimes the honest answer is that replacement is cheaper than repair, or that the problem is a different trade entirely. We'd rather tell you that than take the job.

How quickly can you come out?

It depends on the schedule and where you are. For short urgent jobs we can often fit you in quickly. For planned work, we'll give you a realistic date rather than an optimistic one.

Do you take on the general home carpenter projects WV rental owners need between tenants?

Yes, and turnaround usually matters on those. Tell us the vacancy window when you call and we'll tell you honestly whether we can hit it.

Is there a better time of year to book work?

For exterior projects, late spring through early autumn — anything needing paint or sealer has to cure, and that doesn't happen properly in November. Interior work is the reverse: winter is when we have the most availability because everyone else's outdoor projects have stopped.

My gate has started leaning. Can it be saved?

Usually it's the post rather than the gate. Posts set straight into soil without adequate depth or drainage rot at ground level after a few years, which is what produces the lean. Resetting the post properly with gravel at the base normally saves the gate itself.
