Had them out after the back steps started going soft underfoot. He came and looked properly before quoting anything, and told me the structure underneath was still sound — so it ended up a smaller job than I had braced myself for. Turned up when he said he would, cleaned up after himself, and the price at the end was the price we agreed. Not much more you can ask for.

Called on a Tuesday and had someone out the same week. What I appreciated most was being told straight what needed doing now and what could safely wait until spring. No pressure and no trying to talk me into the bigger version of the job. It has held up fine through the winter since.

The quote came through itemised and the final bill matched it, which has honestly not been my experience with everyone around here. They worked around an awkward driveway without once making it my problem, and left the place tidier than they found it. Would have them back.

Fair price, showed up on time, tidy work. No complaints.

What remodeling carpentry covers

Remodeling carpentry is the structural and finish woodwork involved in changing a room — as opposed to building new woodwork into a room that stays as it is. It's the framing, the openings, the subfloor, and all the trim and detail work that puts the room back together afterwards.

How It Works

From first call to finished work — no surprises in between.

  1. A phone held over a workbench beside a notepad sketch of a deck marked up with dimensions — 16 by 12 feet, 36 inch rail, 2x8 pressure-treated joists at 16 inches on centre — with a tape measure and carpenter's pencil alongside

    Step 1

    Tell us about the project

Call, text, or send a message with what you're looking to build or repair. No form to fill in and no call centre — it comes straight to us, and you'll get a real answer about whether it's something we do.

  2. Kneeling under a deck to inspect the framing, using a flashlight and a probe to test a rotted band board where it meets a support post

    Step 2

Send photos or schedule a look

A few photos are often enough to tell us what we're dealing with. Where it isn't — anything structural, anything hidden underneath — we'll come out and look properly before quoting rather than guessing from the kerb.

  3. Going through a printed itemised quote line by line at a kitchen table, a tape measure and carpenter's pencil set down beside it

    Step 3

    Get a clear quote

You get a written quote that itemises the work, so you can see what you're paying for and what you aren't. If we think part of it isn't worth doing, we'll say so. No pressure and no surprises at the end.

  4. A finished pressure-treated deck with railing and steps on a West Virginia home, being walked through on completion, wooded hillside behind

    Step 4

    We build it right

We turn up when we said we would, work clean, and haul the offcuts away with us. The job gets built to last in this climate — and we'll walk it with you before we call it finished.

Remodeling Carpentry in Williamson, WV — common questions

Straight answers to what we get asked most.

How much does remodeling carpentry cost in West Virginia?

It depends heavily on whether structure is involved and what's behind the walls. Opening a partition is a small job; opening a bearing wall with a header, posts, and shoring is not. We quote free and in writing, and we separate the certain costs from the contingencies.

How do I know if a wall is load-bearing?

Generally, a wall running perpendicular to the floor joists, with something above it, is a candidate. But in a house that's been modified over decades, the reliable answer comes from looking in the basement and the attic. We check both before quoting.

Do you handle plumbing and electrical too?

No — those go to licensed trades and we coordinate around them. We handle all the carpentry: framing, openings, subfloor, doors, and trim. For most remodels that's the majority of the work.

Will you find problems once you open the wall?

In an older house, sometimes. Old wiring, abandoned plumbing, and framing that was cut for a duct run are all common here. We tell you what we find and get it agreed in writing before the price changes.

How long does a room remodel take?

The carpentry on a single room is usually one to three weeks depending on structure and how much finish work it needs. That's the carpentry window — other trades and drying time extend the overall project.

Can I live in the house during the work?

Usually yes for a single room, though it's dusty and noisy. Kitchen and bathroom remodels are harder because you lose the room for a stretch. We'll be honest at the quote about how disruptive it's going to be.

Do I need a permit for the remodeling carpentry West Virginia inspectors would look at?

It depends on your address and whether structure is involved. Requirements differ between incorporated towns and county addresses, and between Mingo and Logan counties. We'll tell you what applies before starting.

Do you work with a designer or plans I already have?

Yes. If you've got drawings we'll build to them and flag anything that won't work in practice given what's actually in the walls. If you don't, we'll work from a conversation and rough sketches.

What if my project needs a general contractor?

We'll say so at the visit. A whole-house renovation running five trades needs someone managing all of it, and pretending otherwise wastes your time and ours. For carpentry-led projects, we're the right call.

Can you match new work to the original woodwork in an older house?

Usually. Profiles from the 1920s and 30s aren't stocked anymore, but they can be built up from modern pieces or milled from a sample. Where a remodel meets original trim, matching it is what stops the new work looking bolted on.

My floors slope. Can that be fixed during a remodel?

Sometimes, and a remodel is the right time to look at it since the flooring is coming up anyway. Whether it's worth correcting depends on the cause — settled framing can often be sistered and levelled, but a foundation issue is a different and larger job. We'll tell you which you have.

Do you clean up as you go?

Yes. Remodeling is dusty work and we're often in a house people are still living in, so we sheet off the work area, keep the path in and out covered, and clear debris daily rather than letting it pile up until the end.
