Had them out after the back steps started going soft underfoot. He came and looked properly before quoting anything, and told me the structure underneath was still sound — so it ended up a smaller job than I had braced myself for. Turned up when he said he would, cleaned up after himself, and the price at the end was the price we agreed. Not much more you can ask for.

The unit and the labour are separate questions. A prehung interior door into a sound opening is a short job; an exterior door with rotted framing underneath is a repair first and an installation second. We quote both parts in writing after seeing the opening.
Yes, that's common. Just make sure it's the right hand and the right size before you buy — measure the existing door slab and note which side the hinges are on. If you're unsure, send a photo and we'll tell you what to order.
An insert replacement into a sound opening is often an hour or two per window. Full-frame replacement takes considerably longer, and any rot repair adds to it. A whole-house window job is usually a few days.
Wood doors take on moisture and swell in humid weather. A small amount of seasonal movement is normal and can be planed. If it's severe, it usually means the opening has moved or the door wasn't sealed on the top and bottom edges, which lets moisture in faster.
If the frames and sashes are sound, repair plus a good storm window is often better value and keeps the look of the house. If the sills have rotted through or the frames have racked, replacement makes more sense. We'll give you an honest read rather than defaulting to replacement.
Some, but usually less than people expect — windows are a modest share of heat loss. The clearer benefit is comfort, because draughts stop. If lower bills are the main goal, we'll tell you where the money would go further.
For a straight replacement in an existing opening it usually isn't a factor. Cutting a new opening can be, and requirements differ between incorporated towns and county addresses. We'll confirm what applies to your address first.
We stop and show you. Rotted framing around an opening has to be cut back to sound wood and replaced before the new unit goes in, or it will fail again from behind. It changes the price, and you'll agree the change before we carry on.
Yes, though it becomes a framing job. Widening means a new header sized for the span and proper support at each end. On a load-bearing wall that's structural work and gets treated accordingly.
Yes. They're worth having on most houses here, particularly ones sitting in shade where the entry door stays damp. The exception is a dark door in direct afternoon sun, where a storm door can trap heat and damage the finish — we'll flag it if that applies.

In a house that's ninety years old and has settled into a hillside, almost nothing is plumb. Hang a perfect prehung door into an opening that's leaning half an inch and the door will swing open on its own, or refuse to latch, or bind at the top corner.
So the opening gets corrected first. That means shimming to plumb and square, checking the header hasn't sagged, and confirming the floor under the jambs is solid. On an exterior opening it also means finding out what condition the framing is in behind the old casing, because water gets in around doors and windows more than anywhere else on a house.
This is the part that takes the time, and it's the part that decides whether the door still works properly in five years.
An exterior door has two jobs: swing right and keep weather out. The second one happens almost entirely in details you can't see once the casing is on.
The sill has to be supported and pitched so water runs out rather than sitting. Flashing has to lap correctly — the wrong overlap order channels water into the wall instead of out of it. The gap around the frame gets insulated with low-expansion foam, because standard foam expands hard enough to bow a jamb and stop the door closing.

Replacement windows come in two broad approaches, and which one suits depends on the condition of what's there.
Storm doors are worth more here than in a lot of places, because so many houses sit in hollows where the sun doesn't hit the front of the building for much of the day. An entry door that stays damp deteriorates faster, and a storm door takes the weather off it.
The one caution is on doors that get direct afternoon sun. A storm door over a dark-coloured entry door can trap heat in the gap and cook the finish off the door behind it. On those elevations we'll suggest a full-view storm with venting, or advise against one.
Unit price is the part people compare, but installation cost is driven by the opening rather than the door. A straight swap into a sound opening is quick. Anything involving rot or reframing is not.
What's involved
It's worth setting expectations, because this comes up on a fair share of exterior jobs. Pull the casing off a door or window on the weather side of an older house and there's a reasonable chance of finding soft framing, previous repairs done with caulk, or a sill that's been wet for years.
None of it is a disaster and all of it is fixable, but it changes the job from a swap to a repair-and-swap. We quote with that possibility flagged rather than pretending it can't happen, and if we open up and find it, you hear about it before we go further.
People often replace windows expecting the heating bill to drop sharply, and the honest answer is that it usually helps less than the marketing suggests. Windows are a modest share of heat loss in most houses.
Where you do feel a real difference is draughts, which is a comfort issue more than an efficiency one — and draughts are as often about the seal around the frame as the unit itself. A properly air-sealed installation of a mid-range window beats a badly sealed installation of an expensive one every time.

Either works. Plenty of people buy their own doors and windows from a big-box store and want them fitted, and that's a normal job for us.
The one thing worth checking before you buy is the handing and the size. A door is left-hand or right-hand depending on which side the hinges sit when it swings toward you, and getting it wrong means a return trip to the store. Measure the existing slab rather than the opening, and note the hinge side. If you're unsure, send a photo and we'll tell you what to order.
For windows, the measurement that matters is the rough opening, not the glass. Old openings are rarely a standard size, which is one reason insert replacements are common here — the insert is made to the opening rather than the other way round.
Interior doors get less attention than exterior ones and cause just as many complaints. A door that won't stay put, drags on the carpet, or has a growing gap at one corner is telling you the opening has moved.
In a settled house the fix isn't a new door. It's shimming the jamb back to plumb, sometimes trimming the slab to follow the floor, and adjusting the strike plate so the latch catches where the door now sits. Hanging a brand new prehung into an unaddressed opening reproduces the same problem with better-looking timber.
Where several doors in a house all lean the same way, that's usually the house rather than the doors, and it's worth understanding why before spending money on units.
