Door and Window Installation Holden WV

Holden's houses were built by Island Creek Coal to a small number of standard patterns, and the windows and doors were part of the pattern. That makes replacement here a question of proportion as much as performance — get the sightlines wrong and a company house stops looking like one.

Had them out after the back steps started going soft underfoot. He came and looked properly before quoting anything, and told me the structure underneath was still sound — so it ended up a smaller job than I had braced myself for. Turned up when he said he would, cleaned up after himself, and the price at the end was the price we agreed. Not much more you can ask for.

Called on a Tuesday and had someone out the same week. What I appreciated most was being told straight what needed doing now and what could safely wait until spring. No pressure and no trying to talk me into the bigger version of the job. It has held up fine through the winter since.

The quote came through itemised and the final bill matched it, which has honestly not been my experience with everyone around here. They worked around an awkward driveway without once making it my problem, and left the place tidier than they found it. Would have them back.

Proportion on a house built to a plan

The window openings on these houses are consistent, and their proportions are part of what makes the camps look the way they do. A replacement that fills the same hole with a different pane pattern or a heavier frame changes the face of the building even when it performs better.

How It Works

From first call to finished work — no surprises in between.

  1. A phone held over a workbench beside a notepad sketch of a deck marked up with dimensions — 16 by 12 feet, 36 inch rail, 2x8 pressure-treated joists at 16 inches on centre — with a tape measure and carpenter's pencil alongside

    Step 1

    Tell us about the project

Call, text, or send a message with what you're looking to build or repair. No form to fill in and no call centre — it comes straight to us, and you'll get a real answer about whether it's something we do.

  2. Kneeling under a deck to inspect the framing, using a flashlight and a probe to test a rotted band board where it meets a support post

    Step 2

Send photos or schedule a look

A few photos are often enough to tell us what we're dealing with. Where it isn't — anything structural, anything hidden underneath — we'll come out and look properly before quoting rather than guessing from the kerb.

  3. Going through a printed itemised quote line by line at a kitchen table, a tape measure and carpenter's pencil set down beside it

    Step 3

    Get a clear quote

You get a written quote that itemises the work, so you can see what you're paying for and what you aren't. If we think part of it isn't worth doing, we'll say so. No pressure and no surprises at the end.

  4. A finished pressure-treated deck with railing and steps on a West Virginia home, being walked through on completion, wooded hillside behind

    Step 4

    We build it right

We turn up when we said we would, work clean, and haul the offcuts away with us. The job gets built to last in this climate — and we'll walk it with you before we call it finished.

Doors & Windows in Holden — common questions

Straight answers to what we get asked most.

Will new windows make my house look wrong?

They can, and it is worth specifying before ordering. Proportion and pane pattern are what the eye reads on these houses, and because the camps repeat, the original reference is visible on the neighbours. Getting it right beforehand usually costs nothing.

Why do you want to look at the back of the house first?

Because that is the low side, and the drainage here was laid out for the coal operation rather than the houses. The framing around openings on that side has been taking runoff for decades, and it needs to be sound before a new unit goes in.

Are all the windows in my house the same size?

Often, and that helps. These houses were built to standard patterns, so where openings repeat, the units get cheaper and the install runs faster. We measure rather than assume, but the pattern usually holds.

Which county handles permitting?

Logan County, separately from Mingo County. It matters most where an opening is being resized or a header changed. We confirm what applies before starting.

Can you match the original detail on a company house?

Usually, and Holden is the best case for it. The houses were built to standard patterns, so the profile you need is generally still visible on the same street. Where something genuinely can't be sourced we'll show you the nearest option rather than substituting quietly.

My neighbour just had the same repair done. Does that mean mine is coming?

Quite possibly. These houses were built the same way at the same time on the same ground, so they tend to reach the same failures together. It's worth a look underneath before it becomes urgent.

The house is dug into the hill and the back is hard to get to. Is that an issue?

It's the normal situation in the camps and it's usually the side the work is on. It affects access and how long material handling takes, not whether the repair can be done properly.

More on door & window work in Holden

Because the pattern repeats down the street, there is a reference right there. We can see what the original proportions were on the neighbours and specify to them, rather than guessing at what the house used to have.

That is a specification decision, made before ordering, and it usually costs little or nothing. Made afterwards, it costs the price of the windows.
