Stairs and Railings Holden WV

Holden was built to a plan, and the stairs were part of it. Where a company house still has its original newel, balusters and handrail, those are a documented pattern rather than a mystery — which makes repair and matching realistic here in a way it rarely is.

Had them out after the back steps started going soft underfoot. He came and looked properly before quoting anything, and told me the structure underneath was still sound — so it ended up a smaller job than I had braced myself for. Turned up when he said he would, cleaned up after himself, and the price at the end was the price we agreed. Not much more you can ask for.

Called on a Tuesday and had someone out the same week. What I appreciated most was being told straight what needed doing now and what could safely wait until spring. No pressure and no trying to talk me into the bigger version of the job. It has held up fine through the winter since.

The quote came through itemised and the final bill matched it, which has honestly not been my experience with everyone around here. They worked around an awkward driveway without once making it my problem, and left the place tidier than they found it. Would have them back.

Original stair parts, and the reference next door

These houses were built to a small number of standard patterns, so the stair detail repeats down the street. Where a component has been lost or replaced with something modern, the original is usually visible on a neighbouring house.

How It Works

From first call to finished work — no surprises in between.

  1. A phone held over a workbench beside a notepad sketch of a deck marked up with dimensions — 16 by 12 feet, 36 inch rail, 2x8 pressure-treated joists at 16 inches on centre — with a tape measure and carpenter's pencil alongside

    Step 1

    Tell us about the project

Call, text, or send a message with what you're looking to build or repair. No form to fill in and no call centre — it comes straight to us, and you'll get a real answer about whether it's something we do.

  2. Kneeling under a deck to inspect the framing, using a flashlight and a probe to test a rotted band board where it meets a support post

    Step 2

Send photos or schedule a look

A few photos are often enough to tell us what we're dealing with. Where it isn't — anything structural, anything hidden underneath — we'll come out and look properly before quoting rather than guessing from the kerb.

  3. Going through a printed itemised quote line by line at a kitchen table, a tape measure and carpenter's pencil set down beside it

    Step 3

    Get a clear quote

You get a written quote that itemises the work, so you can see what you're paying for and what you aren't. If we think part of it isn't worth doing, we'll say so. No pressure and no surprises at the end.

  4. A finished pressure-treated deck with railing and steps on a West Virginia home, being walked through on completion, wooded hillside behind

    Step 4

    We build it right

We turn up when we said we would, work clean, and haul the offcuts away with us. The job gets built to last in this climate — and we'll walk it with you before we call it finished.

Stairs & Railings in Holden — common questions

Straight answers to what we get asked most.

Can you match the original stair parts in a company house?

This is the best place we work for it. The camps were built to standard patterns, so the original newel or baluster profile is usually still visible on a neighbouring house and can be turned or milled to match rather than approximated.

Someone bolted a modern rail over my original stair. Can that be undone?

Usually, and it is worth doing on what is often the most visible joinery in the house. Because we know what should be there from the pattern, returning it to something coherent rarely means starting from scratch.

Why do the steps up from the street keep failing at the bottom?

The stringer ends sit in ground that takes runoff off the hill and stays wet. A rebuild that keeps the structure clear of soil and lands it on something draining lasts several times as long as one that repeats the original detail.

My neighbour just had their steps rebuilt. Is mine due?

Quite possibly. These houses and their approach flights were built the same way at the same time on the same ground, so they tend to reach the same point together.

Can you match the original detail on a company house?

Usually, and Holden is the best case for it. The houses were built to standard patterns, so the profile you need is generally still visible on the same street. Where something genuinely can't be sourced we'll show you the nearest option rather than substituting quietly.

My neighbour just had the same repair done. Does that mean mine is coming?

Quite possibly. These houses were built the same way at the same time on the same ground, so they tend to reach the same failures together. It's worth a look underneath before it becomes urgent.

The house is dug into the hill and the back is hard to get to. Is that an issue?

It's the normal situation in the camps and it's usually the side the work is on. It affects access and how long material handling takes, not whether the repair can be done properly.

What stairs & railings in Holden actually involves

Most people are buying a result, not a list of tasks. Pick a topic to see what we look at before quoting in Holden.

More on stair & railing work in Holden

That means a newel or a run of balusters can be turned or milled to the actual original rather than approximated. On a stair — which is the most visible piece of joinery in most of these houses — that difference is worth having.

It also means we know what should be there. A stair that has had a modern rail bolted over the original detail can usually be returned to something coherent without starting from scratch.
