Finish Carpentry Logan WV

Almost every older house in Logan has at least one door that swings shut on its own, drifts open, or has to be lifted to latch. That is not the door being warped. It is the opening, and it is fixable.

Had them out after the back steps started going soft underfoot. He came and looked properly before quoting anything, and told me the structure underneath was still sound — so it ended up a smaller job than I had braced myself for. Turned up when he said he would, cleaned up after himself, and the price at the end was the price we agreed. Not much more you can ask for.

Called on a Tuesday and had someone out the same week. What I appreciated most was being told straight what needed doing now and what could safely wait until spring. No pressure and no trying to talk me into the bigger version of the job. It has held up fine through the winter since.

The quote came through itemised and the final bill matched it, which has honestly not been my experience with everyone around here. They worked around an awkward driveway without once making it my problem, and left the place tidier than they found it. Would have them back.

Why doors misbehave in these houses

A door hangs on the jamb, and the jamb hangs on the framing. In a house that has been settling on block piers for ninety years, that framing has moved — usually the header has dropped a little on one side, or the whole opening has racked out of plumb by a small amount that a door reports precisely.

How It Works

From first call to finished work — no surprises in between.

  1. A phone held over a workbench beside a notepad sketch of a deck marked up with dimensions — 16 by 12 feet, 36 inch rail, 2x8 pressure-treated joists at 16 inches on centre — with a tape measure and carpenter's pencil alongside

    Step 1

    Tell us about the project

Call, text, or send a message with what you're looking to build or repair. No form to fill in and no call centre — it comes straight to us, and you'll get a real answer about whether it's something we do.

  2. Kneeling under a deck to inspect the framing, using a flashlight and a probe to test a rotted band board where it meets a support post

    Step 2

Send photos or schedule a look

A few photos are often enough to tell us what we're dealing with. Where it isn't — anything structural, anything hidden underneath — we'll come out and look properly before quoting rather than guessing from the kerb.

  3. Going through a printed itemised quote line by line at a kitchen table, a tape measure and carpenter's pencil set down beside it

    Step 3

    Get a clear quote

You get a written quote that itemises the work, so you can see what you're paying for and what you aren't. If we think part of it isn't worth doing, we'll say so. No pressure and no surprises at the end.

  4. A finished pressure-treated deck with railing and steps on a West Virginia home, being walked through on completion, wooded hillside behind

    Step 4

    We build it right

We turn up when we said we would, work clean, and haul the offcuts away with us. The job gets built to last in this climate — and we'll walk it with you before we call it finished.

Finish Carpentry in Logan — common questions

Straight answers to what we get asked most.

My door swings open on its own. Is it warped?

Almost certainly not. It is telling you the hinge side is out of plumb, leaning back — which in a house settled on piers is normal. The fix is at the jamb rather than the door.

Can you just plane the door so it stops sticking?

We would rather not. Planing removes material you cannot put back and treats the symptom. Shimming the jamb back to plumb and resetting the strike fixes the cause and keeps the door intact.

My hinge screws just spin. Does the door need replacing?

No, that is one of the easier repairs there is — the screws need something solid to bite into again. Original solid panel doors in these houses are better than most replacements, and it is worth keeping them.

Is one door worth a callout?

Out here, not really — Logan is forty minutes away. Try every door in the house, including the ones nobody uses, and we will do the lot in one visit for a fraction of what several trips would cost.

Do you actually come out to Logan, or just Williamson?

Logan is a regular run for us — about 40 minutes from Williamson on US-119. It's well inside the hour we cover, and we're in Logan County often enough that it isn't a special trip.

Is a permit different in Logan County than in Mingo County?

It can be. Logan County and Mingo County administer permitting and inspection separately, so the same job can have different requirements depending which side of the line you're on. Structural work is the case where it matters most. We'll tell you what applies before we start rather than after.

My house is up a hollow with a narrow drive. Is that a problem?

No, it's normal here. It affects what we can haul in one trip and how long material handling takes, not whether the job can be done. We'd rather see the access before quoting so the number accounts for it.

What finish carpentry in Logan actually involves

Most people are buying a result, not a list of tasks. Pick a topic to see what we look at before quoting in Logan.

More on finish carpentry work in Logan

A door that swings open by itself is telling you the hinge side is out of plumb, leaning back. One that swings shut is leaning the other way. One that will not latch has a strike plate that is no longer where the latch arrives. None of those is a problem with the door.

The fix is at the jamb: shimming it back to plumb and square within what the opening allows, checking the header, and setting the strike to where the door actually sits now. Planing the slab until it stops rubbing treats the symptom and takes material off a door you cannot put back.
