Finish Carpentry Chattaroy WV

Most people in Chattaroy paint their own finish work, and that is entirely sensible. What matters then is what we leave behind — because "ready for paint" and "ready for a painter" are not the same standard.

Had them out after the back steps started going soft underfoot. He came and looked properly before quoting anything, and told me the structure underneath was still sound — so it ended up a smaller job than I had braced myself for. Turned up when he said he would, cleaned up after himself, and the price at the end was the price we agreed. Not much more you can ask for.

Called on a Tuesday and had someone out the same week. What I appreciated most was being told straight what needed doing now and what could safely wait until spring. No pressure and no trying to talk me into the bigger version of the job. It has held up fine through the winter since.

The quote came through itemised and the final bill matched it, which has honestly not been my experience with everyone around here. They worked around an awkward driveway without once making it my problem, and left the place tidier than they found it. Would have them back.

What ready for paint actually means

It means every nail set below the surface and filled, every fill sanded flush rather than proud, joints caulked where they should be and left alone where they should not, and dust cleaned off before we go. Done properly, you can put a brush to it the next morning without doing anything first.

How It Works

From first call to finished work — no surprises in between.

  1. A phone held over a workbench beside a notepad sketch of a deck marked up with dimensions — 16 by 12 feet, 36 inch rail, 2x8 pressure-treated joists at 16 inches on centre — with a tape measure and carpenter's pencil alongside

    Step 1

    Tell us about the project

Call, text, or send a message with what you're looking to build or repair. No form to fill in and no call centre — it comes straight to us, and you'll get a real answer about whether it's something we do.

  2. Kneeling under a deck to inspect the framing, using a flashlight and a probe to test a rotted band board where it meets a support post

    Step 2

Send photos or schedule a look

A few photos are often enough to tell us what we're dealing with. Where it isn't — anything structural, anything hidden underneath — we'll come out and look properly before quoting rather than guessing from the kerb.

  3. Going through a printed itemised quote line by line at a kitchen table, a tape measure and carpenter's pencil set down beside it

    Step 3

    Get a clear quote

You get a written quote that itemises the work, so you can see what you're paying for and what you aren't. If we think part of it isn't worth doing, we'll say so. No pressure and no surprises at the end.

  4. A finished pressure-treated deck with railing and steps on a West Virginia home, being walked through on completion, wooded hillside behind

    Step 4

    We build it right

We turn up when we said we would, work clean, and haul the offcuts away with us. The job gets built to last in this climate — and we'll walk it with you before we call it finished.

Finish Carpentry in Chattaroy — common questions

Straight answers to what we get asked most.

What does ready for paint mean?

Nails set and filled, fills sanded flush, caulk where it belongs, dust cleaned off. You can put a brush to it the next morning without doing anything first. If you want it left rougher and cheaper, that is fine — it should just be a decision rather than a surprise.

Should I prime before filling or after?

Before. Filler over bare wood absorbs differently from filler over primer, and that shows through the topcoat as a different sheen at every nail hole. Fit, prime, fill, sand, then finish coats.

Can I paint it myself?

Most people here do and it saves real money. Tell us at the quote so we know which stage to leave it at. It does not change how the carpentry is done.

Will you come back for the last few items?

Yes, and being ten minutes out makes that easy. Those short end-of-job lists are what separate a good job from a nearly-good one.

Is Chattaroy too small a job for you to come out?

No, and it's the one place where that's least likely to be a problem. We're about ten minutes away, so small repairs here don't carry the travel cost that makes them awkward further out.

My back addition is the part that's failing. Is that normal?

It's the most common thing we find in Chattaroy. Additions here were frequently built onto the original house over time, and the joint between old and new is usually where water gets in and framing gives up first.

The house has flooded before. Does that change the repair?

It changes what we check, not what we can do. We probe the low framing rather than judging by what the floor feels like, because flood rot shows up years later and well below where anyone is looking.

More on finish carpentry work in Chattaroy

What it does not mean is trim on the wall with nail holes showing and a bag of filler left on the sill. That is a legitimate way to buy the work more cheaply, and if that is what you want we will price it that way — but it should be a decision rather than a surprise.

Tell us at the quote which you are after. It changes the number and it changes nothing else about how the carpentry is done.
