Finish Carpentry Holden WV

The original woodwork in Holden's company houses has been painted many times over nearly a century. Before any of it gets sanded, it is worth knowing what is in those layers — because houses of this age routinely have lead-based paint under the newer coats.

Had them out after the back steps started going soft underfoot. He came and looked properly before quoting anything, and told me the structure underneath was still sound — so it ended up a smaller job than I had braced myself for. Turned up when he said he would, cleaned up after himself, and the price at the end was the price we agreed. Not much more you can ask for.

Called on a Tuesday and had someone out the same week. What I appreciated most was being told straight what needed doing now and what could safely wait until spring. No pressure and no trying to talk me into the bigger version of the job. It has held up fine through the winter since.

The quote came through itemised and the final bill matched it, which has honestly not been my experience with everyone around here. They worked around an awkward driveway without once making it my problem, and left the place tidier than they found it. Would have them back.

Test before sanding original woodwork

Paint used in housing before 1978 may contain lead, and the woodwork in these houses has been repainted repeatedly since the camps were built. Sanding or scraping it is what turns a stable, painted surface into dust, and dust is the part that matters.

How It Works

From first call to finished work — no surprises in between.

  1. A phone held over a workbench beside a notepad sketch of a deck marked up with dimensions — 16 by 12 feet, 36 inch rail, 2x8 pressure-treated joists at 16 inches on centre — with a tape measure and carpenter's pencil alongside

    Step 1

    Tell us about the project

Call, text, or send a message with what you're looking to build or repair. No form to fill in and no call centre — it comes straight to us, and you'll get a real answer about whether it's something we do.

  2. Kneeling under a deck to inspect the framing, using a flashlight and a probe to test a rotted band board where it meets a support post

    Step 2

Send photos or schedule a look

A few photos are often enough to tell us what we're dealing with. Where it isn't — anything structural, anything hidden underneath — we'll come out and look properly before quoting rather than guessing from the kerb.

  3. Going through a printed itemised quote line by line at a kitchen table, a tape measure and carpenter's pencil set down beside it

    Step 3

    Get a clear quote

You get a written quote that itemises the work, so you can see what you're paying for and what you aren't. If we think part of it isn't worth doing, we'll say so. No pressure and no surprises at the end.

  4. A finished pressure-treated deck with railing and steps on a West Virginia home, being walked through on completion, wooded hillside behind

    Step 4

    We build it right

We turn up when we said we would, work clean, and haul the offcuts away with us. The job gets built to last in this climate — and we'll walk it with you before we call it finished.

Finish Carpentry in Holden — common questions

Straight answers to what we get asked most.

Is there lead paint in my house?

There may be — paint used in housing before 1978 can contain lead, and the woodwork in these houses has been repainted many times. Test first. It is cheap and quick, and the result changes how the work is done rather than whether it happens.

What happens if the test is positive?

Disturbing that paint becomes regulated work that has to be handled by someone certified for it, and we will tell you so rather than sanding and hoping. Often the better answer is leaving sound paint undisturbed and working over it.

Can new trim be matched to woodwork that has been painted this many times?

Yes, and the target is the profile as it looks now rather than as it was originally cut — many coats of paint soften the detail. That is usually the right match, because it is what the room actually looks like.

Does the standard house pattern help?

It does. The woodwork repeats from house to house, so what we learn on one transfers to the next on the same street, and a neighbour's job is a fair guide to yours.

Can you match the original detail on a company house?

Usually, and Holden is the best case for it. The houses were built to standard patterns, so the profile you need is generally still visible on the same street. Where something genuinely can't be sourced we'll show you the nearest option rather than substituting quietly.

My neighbour just had the same repair done. Does that mean mine is coming?

Quite possibly. These houses were built the same way at the same time on the same ground, so they tend to reach the same failures together. It's worth a look underneath before it becomes urgent.

The house is dug into the hill and the back is hard to get to. Is that an issue?

It's the normal situation in the camps and it's usually the side the work is on. It affects access and how long material handling takes, not whether the repair can be done properly.

More on finish carpentry work in Holden

The sequence that makes sense is to test first. Test kits are cheap and quick, and the answer changes how the work is done rather than whether it happens. Where it comes back negative, prep proceeds normally. Where it comes back positive, disturbing that paint is regulated work that has to be handled by someone certified for it, and we will tell you that rather than sanding and hoping.

There is often a third route worth considering: leaving the existing paint undisturbed and working over it. On sound woodwork that is frequently both the cheapest and the safest answer.
