He came and looked properly before quoting anything, and told me the structure underneath was still sound — so it ended up a smaller job than I had braced myself for. Usually. The drain moves, which is the plumber's work, and we frame, waterproof and tile the shower. Whether it can be completely curbless depends on the framing under the bathroom, which we look at before quoting.
Put the blocking in now, at least. It costs very little while the walls are open, and it means a bar can go exactly where it is needed later without cutting into new tile.
Often, and the remodel is the time for it. It needs a proper header and new casing, and it is far less disruptive when the room is already stripped.
No. A shower built from a base, backer board and tile can come up by hand in several trips. It often suits an old room better than a molded unit would.

Most people are buying a result, not a list of tasks. Pick a topic to see what we look at before quoting in Logan.
The shower is framed where the tub stood, or somewhere better if the plumber can move the drain. The walls get blocking wherever a grab bar might one day go, not just where one is needed now, then backer board, waterproofing and tile. A built-in bench can be framed while the walls are open.
The threshold is the part to get right. A shower you walk into without a step has to fall to its drain inside the floor, and whether an older Logan house allows that depends on the framing underneath.
In a house on piers, the bathroom floor is joists with a subfloor on top and little depth to spare. A curbless shower needs its base lower than the floor around it, so either the subfloor in the shower area is dropped between the joists, or the rest of the bathroom floor is built up to meet it.
Dropping it means cutting into the framing, which only makes sense where the joists are sound and run the right way. Logan's repeated wetting from the Guyandotte and Island Creek, plus hillside runoff, keeps the ground under a lot of houses damp, so the joists and sill under a bathroom are worth seeing before anything is promised. Building the room up is simpler, but it puts a lip at the bathroom door, which is the very thing the job was meant to remove, so it needs a gentle ramp in the flooring.
Where neither works, a low curb gets most of the benefit. We tell you which your house allows after looking underneath, not before.
Bathroom doors in these houses are narrow, often narrower than a walker or wheelchair wants. Widening one means a new header in a plaster wall and casing on both sides, and it is far easier while the bathroom is already torn out than as a separate job.
Up the hollows off Island Creek and Mud Fork, the roads narrow and driveways get steep, so a one-piece shower unit may not be a realistic delivery. A shower built from a base, backer and tile comes in by hand, and it fits an odd-shaped old room better anyway.

Logan's housing runs heavily to early-to-mid 20th century stock built when the coal operations were at their peak — company-built houses in town and up the hollows, most of them wood-framed on block or stone piers rather than a poured perimeter foundation. Nearly all of them have a covered front porch, because that was standard on the pattern. Those porches were framed with untreated lumber and set close to grade, which is the single biggest reason porch work is the most common carpentry call in this county.
Logan sits at the confluence of the Guyandotte River and Island Creek, and the town has a long, documented flood history — the 1977 Guyandotte flood is still the benchmark locally. Repeated wetting is what drives the rot we see: sill plates, porch posts, joist ends, and the bottoms of exterior door frames. Add hillside runoff coming off the slopes behind the houses and you get wood that stays damp long after the weather clears.
Town lots in Logan are tight and often sit right on the street, so material gets carried rather than backed in. Up the hollows off Island Creek and Mud Fork the roads narrow and the driveways get steep, which limits trailer size and means longer carries. None of that changes the price of the carpentry — it changes how long the day takes, and we allow for it in the quote rather than discovering it on arrival.
