Had them out after the back steps started going soft underfoot. He came and looked properly before quoting anything, and told me the structure underneath was still sound — so it ended up a smaller job than I had braced myself for. Turned up when he said he would, cleaned up after himself, and the price at the end was the price we agreed. Not much more you can ask for.

Usually, and it is a good use of the space. The tub platform comes out cleanly, and the plumber works out the drain with the floor framing before anything is cut. We frame, waterproof and tile the shower.
It can, but the crack has probably been letting water onto the subfloor. Replacing the unit lets us see and fix what is underneath, and a tiled shower on a solid base won't flex the same way.

The full picture
Most people are buying a result, not a list of tasks. Pick a topic to see what we look at before quoting in Chapmanville.
The tub deck is usually a framed platform, so it comes out cleanly and leaves floor to work with. The new shower can take the tub's space, the old shower's space, or both, and a low curb or none is more achievable here than in an old house, because the floors are flatter and more predictable. Engineered floor framing still limits where a drain can go, and the plumber plans that with us before anything is cut.
Blocking goes into the walls for grab bars and a seat while they are open, whether or not anyone needs them yet.
The molded tub and shower units common in newer houses flex a little every time someone steps in. After a couple of decades that movement shows up as hairline cracks near the drain, a base that gives underfoot, or caulk that won't stay put.

A shower remodel with a solid base and tile on backer board doesn't flex the way a thin shell does.
If the unit is sound and just dated, a straight replacement in the same footprint is a reasonable, smaller job, and we will say so.
The older wood-framed houses in town and along the Guyandotte sit on piers on low ground, with the same slow rot at sill plates and joist ends seen downriver. A bathroom remodel there starts under the floor rather than at the shower, and soft subfloor around the toilet and tub is part of the job. Where joists have gone, that is floor joist repair.
Chapmanville is about fifty minutes from Williamson, almost all of it four-lane on Corridor G. Sites are generally open with real driveways, so the old tub and tile go into a container, materials are delivered rather than carried, and tile gets cut outside instead of in the hallway.
Permitting is Logan County, administered separately from Mingo.
Chapmanville is the one town on our list with two clearly different sets of housing, and the difference drives what we get called for. There is the older stock — wood-framed houses in town and along the Guyandotte, on piers, with the porches and the age profile the rest of the county has. Then there is everything built since Corridor G made this a commutable spot, which is newer, on poured foundations, and comes with decks, garages, and finished interiors instead. Older houses here bring us rot and porch work; newer ones bring deck work, trim, and remodelling.
The Guyandotte runs through it, and the low-lying older properties carry the flood exposure that comes with that — the same slow rot at sill plates and joist ends we see downriver. The newer housing up off the flat has a different problem entirely: decks and porches that are fifteen to twenty-five years old, built to the standards of the time, now reaching the age where ledger attachments, fasteners, and railing connections need looking at rather than assuming.
About fifty minutes from Williamson and nearly all of it four-lane on Corridor G, which makes Chapmanville one of the easier runs despite being one of the further towns. Sites are generally more open than in the river towns, with real driveways and room to stage material. It is inside the hour we cover, comfortably.
