Newly built covered front porch on a West Virginia home

Porch Builder Logan WV

In Logan, a new porch is usually a replacement. The housing here came with porches as standard, most of them are original, and there comes a point where a structure that's been repaired twice is better rebuilt than patched a third time.

Had them out after the back steps started going soft underfoot. He came and looked properly before quoting anything, and told me the structure underneath was still sound — so it ended up a smaller job than I had braced myself for. Turned up when he said he would, cleaned up after himself, and the price at the end was the price we agreed. Not much more you can ask for.

Called on a Tuesday and had someone out the same week. What I appreciated most was being told straight what needed doing now and what could safely wait until spring. No pressure and no trying to talk me into the bigger version of the job. It has held up fine through the winter since.

The quote came through itemised and the final bill matched it, which has honestly not been my experience with everyone around here. They worked around an awkward driveway without once making it my problem, and left the place tidier than they found it. Would have them back.

When a rebuild beats another repair

The porches on Logan's older houses were framed in untreated lumber, set close to the ground, on block or stone piers rather than a continuous foundation. That was normal for the period and it works while the drainage does. After eighty or ninety years at the confluence of the Guyandotte and Island Creek, a lot of them are past the point where repair is the better value.

How It Works

From first call to finished work — no surprises in between.

  1. A phone held over a workbench beside a notepad sketch of a deck marked up with dimensions — 16 by 12 feet, 36 inch rail, 2x8 pressure-treated joists at 16 inches on centre — with a tape measure and carpenter's pencil alongside

    Step 1

    Tell us about the project

Call, text, or send a message with what you're looking to build or repair. No form to fill in and no call centre — it comes straight to us, and you'll get a real answer about whether it's something we do.

  2. Kneeling under a deck to inspect the framing, using a flashlight and a probe to test a rotted band board where it meets a support post

    Step 2

Send photos or schedule a look

A few photos are often enough to tell us what we're dealing with. Where it isn't — anything structural, anything hidden underneath — we'll come out and look properly before quoting rather than guessing from the kerb.

  3. Going through a printed itemised quote line by line at a kitchen table, a tape measure and carpenter's pencil set down beside it

    Step 3

    Get a clear quote

You get a written quote that itemises the work, so you can see what you're paying for and what you aren't. If we think part of it isn't worth doing, we'll say so. No pressure and no surprises at the end.

  4. A finished pressure-treated deck with railing and steps on a West Virginia home, being walked through on completion, wooded hillside behind

    Step 4

    We build it right

We turn up when we said we would, work clean, and haul the offcuts away with us. The job gets built to last in this climate — and we'll walk it with you before we call it finished.

Not sure what your porche needs?

Porches in Logan — common questions

Straight answers to what we get asked most.

How do I know if my porch should be rebuilt rather than repaired?

It comes down to how much sound original structure is left. If the piers have moved and the joist ends and band board have gone, a repair is a rebuild paid for in instalments, and each instalment costs more in labour than doing it once. We get underneath and look before recommending either.

Will a new porch look out of place on an old Logan house?

Not if it's built to the house. Post profiles, railing spacing, and board widths on this stock follow a recognisable pattern, and matching it closely is realistic. Where a specific original detail genuinely can't be sourced, we'll show you the nearest option up front.

Does a new porch in Logan County need a permit?

Usually, since a covered porch is structural. Logan County handles permitting and inspection separately from Mingo County, so requirements differ depending which side of the line you're on. We confirm what applies before starting.

Can you build if my driveway is steep and narrow?

Yes — it's normal up the hollows here. It affects load sizes and how many trips material takes, which we allow for in the quote rather than discovering on the day.

Do you actually come out to Logan, or just Williamson?

Logan is a regular run for us — about 40 minutes from Williamson on US-119. It's well inside the hour we cover, and we're in Logan County often enough that it isn't a special trip.

Is a permit different in Logan County than in Mingo County?

It can be. Logan County and Mingo County administer permitting and inspection separately, so the same job can have different requirements depending which side of the line you're on. Structural work is the case where it matters most. We'll tell you what applies before we start rather than after.

My house is up a hollow with a narrow drive. Is that a problem?

No, it's normal here. It affects what we can haul in one trip and how long material handling takes, not whether the job can be done. We'd rather see the access before quoting so the number accounts for it.

What porches in Logan actually involves

Most people are buying a result, not a list of tasks. Pick a topic to see what we look at before quoting in Logan.

More on porch work in Logan

The honest test is how much of the original structure would still be there afterwards. If the piers have moved, the band board has gone, and the joist ends are soft where they bear, a repair is really a rebuild being paid for in instalments — and each instalment costs more in labour than doing it once.

Where the structure is broadly sound and it's the surface that's failed, we'll say that too, and that's a repair job rather than this one.
