Custom Carpentry Chattaroy WV

Chattaroy houses have grown rather than been built. Rear additions, enclosed back rooms, roofed entries filled in over the years — and the result is interiors with junctions everywhere, which is precisely what made-to-measure work is good at.

Had them out after the back steps started going soft underfoot. He came and looked properly before quoting anything, and told me the structure underneath was still sound — so it ended up a smaller job than I had braced myself for. Turned up when he said he would, cleaned up after himself, and the price at the end was the price we agreed. Not much more you can ask for.

Called on a Tuesday and had someone out the same week. What I appreciated most was being told straight what needed doing now and what could safely wait until spring. No pressure and no trying to talk me into the bigger version of the job. It has held up fine through the winter since.

The quote came through itemised and the final bill matched it, which has honestly not been my experience with everyone around here. They worked around an awkward driveway without once making it my problem, and left the place tidier than they found it. Would have them back.

Where one era meets another

Inside these houses the joins are obvious once you look for them: a step where floor levels never quite matched, a change in ceiling height at a doorway, trim of one profile running into trim of another, and walls of noticeably different thickness.

How It Works

From first call to finished work — no surprises in between.

  1. A phone held over a workbench beside a notepad sketch of a deck marked up with dimensions — 16 by 12 feet, 36 inch rail, 2x8 pressure-treated joists at 16 inches on centre — with a tape measure and carpenter's pencil alongside

    Step 1

    Tell us about the project

Call, text, or send a message with what you're looking to build or repair. No form to fill in and no call centre — it comes straight to us, and you'll get a real answer about whether it's something we do.

  2. Kneeling under a deck to inspect the framing, using a flashlight and a probe to test a rotted band board where it meets a support post

    Step 2

Send photos or schedule a look

A few photos are often enough to tell us what we're dealing with. Where it isn't — anything structural, anything hidden underneath — we'll come out and look properly before quoting rather than guessing from the kerb.

  3. Going through a printed itemised quote line by line at a kitchen table, a tape measure and carpenter's pencil set down beside it

    Step 3

    Get a clear quote

You get a written quote that itemises the work, so you can see what you're paying for and what you aren't. If we think part of it isn't worth doing, we'll say so. No pressure and no surprises at the end.

  4. A finished pressure-treated deck with railing and steps on a West Virginia home, being walked through on completion, wooded hillside behind

    Step 4

    We build it right

We turn up when we said we would, work clean, and haul the offcuts away with us. The job gets built to last in this climate — and we'll walk it with you before we call it finished.

Custom Carpentry in Chattaroy — common questions

Straight answers to what we get asked most.

There's a step between my kitchen and the back room. Can a piece work across that?

Yes, and it is one of the things made-to-measure work does best. The level change gets absorbed into the base of the piece so the top line stays consistent, which is what makes the junction stop being obvious.

My back room used to be a porch. Can I get built-ins in there?

Usually, and those rooms are often the best candidates because they have the light. We check two things first — what the walls will carry, and whether the floor is dry, since these enclosures were frequently built without much of a moisture break underneath.

Can you fix to the walls in an addition?

We establish what the wall actually is before relying on it. Additions here were built at different times by different hands, so what is behind the surface varies. Where it will not carry the load we design around it.

Is one small piece worth you coming out for?

Here, yes. We are about ten minutes away, so a single run of shelves or a cupboard under the stairs is a normal job rather than one where the travel outweighs the making.

Is Chattaroy too small a job for you to come out?

No, and it's the one place where that's least likely to be a problem. We're about ten minutes away, so small repairs here don't carry the travel cost that makes them awkward further out.

My back addition is the part that's failing. Is that normal?

It's the most common thing we find in Chattaroy. Additions here were frequently built onto the original house over time, and the joint between old and new is usually where water gets in and framing gives up first.

The house has flooded before. Does that change the repair?

It changes what we check, not what we can do. We probe the low framing rather than judging by what the floor feels like, because flood rot shows up years later and well below where anyone is looking.

What custom carpentry in Chattaroy actually involves

Most people are buying a result, not a list of tasks. Pick a topic to see what we look at before quoting in Chattaroy.

More on custom carpentry work in Chattaroy

Built-to-fit work handles that in a way bought furniture cannot. A piece can absorb a level change into its base, carry a consistent line across a junction, and be scribed to two walls that are not parallel — which is what makes a room feel deliberate rather than accumulated.

The first job is always establishing what the walls actually are. In an enclosed former porch or a later addition, the construction behind the surface varies, and anything carrying weight needs to be fixed to something real.
