Porch Repair Matewan WV

Porch work in Matewan carries a complication most towns don't have: a lot of this housing stock has been under water. The 1977 flood is the one everyone names, and what it left behind still turns up in porch framing decades later, low down where nobody looks.

Had them out after the back steps started going soft underfoot. He came and looked properly before quoting anything, and told me the structure underneath was still sound — so it ended up a smaller job than I had braced myself for. Turned up when he said he would, cleaned up after himself, and the price at the end was the price we agreed. Not much more you can ask for.

Called on a Tuesday and had someone out the same week. What I appreciated most was being told straight what needed doing now and what could safely wait until spring. No pressure and no trying to talk me into the bigger version of the job. It has held up fine through the winter since.

The quote came through itemised and the final bill matched it, which has honestly not been my experience with everyone around here. They worked around an awkward driveway without once making it my problem, and left the place tidier than they found it. Would have them back.

What flooding leaves in a porch

Water damage in a porch doesn't announce itself the year it happens. A porch that took water and then dried out looks fine for a long time, because the failure is biological rather than structural — the wetting starts rot that then works slowly through the joist ends, the post bottoms, and the band board.

How It Works

From first call to finished work — no surprises in between.

  1. A phone held over a workbench beside a notepad sketch of a deck marked up with dimensions — 16 by 12 feet, 36 inch rail, 2x8 pressure-treated joists at 16 inches on centre — with a tape measure and carpenter's pencil alongside

    Step 1

    Tell us about the project

Call, text, or send a message with what you're looking to build or repair. No form to fill in and no call centre — it comes straight to us, and you'll get a real answer about whether it's something we do.

  2. Kneeling under a deck to inspect the framing, using a flashlight and a probe to test a rotted band board where it meets a support post

    Step 2

Send photos or schedule a look

A few photos are often enough to tell us what we're dealing with. Where it isn't — anything structural, anything hidden underneath — we'll come out and look properly before quoting rather than guessing from the kerb.

  3. Going through a printed itemised quote line by line at a kitchen table, a tape measure and carpenter's pencil set down beside it

    Step 3

    Get a clear quote

You get a written quote that itemises the work, so you can see what you're paying for and what you aren't. If we think part of it isn't worth doing, we'll say so. No pressure and no surprises at the end.

  4. A finished pressure-treated deck with railing and steps on a West Virginia home, being walked through on completion, wooded hillside behind

    Step 4

    We build it right

We turn up when we said we would, work clean, and haul the offcuts away with us. The job gets built to last in this climate — and we'll walk it with you before we call it finished.

Porch Repair in Matewan — common questions

Straight answers to what we get asked most.

My house flooded years ago. Could the porch still be affected?

Very possibly. Flood damage in porch framing usually shows up as rot years after the event, not at the time. The floor can feel fine while the joist ends carrying it have gone. It's worth a look underneath rather than assuming the problem passed with the water.

There's nowhere to park a trailer at my house. Is that a problem?

It's normal in the older part of Matewan and we plan for it. It affects staging and carry time, not whether the job can be done properly.

Can you match the porch detail on an older Matewan house?

Usually, closely enough that a repair reads as part of the house. Post profiles and railing spacing are generally matchable. Where something genuinely isn't, we'll say so before starting.

Do you work inside the historic district?

Yes. It mainly affects how carefully we handle staging and access rather than the carpentry itself. If there are additional requirements on your specific property we'll confirm them before starting.

How far is Matewan from your base?

About twenty minutes from Williamson down WV-49 along the Tug Fork. It's one of the closest towns we cover, so scheduling is easy and a second trip for material isn't a problem.

My house is in the older part of town with no driveway. Does that matter?

It affects staging more than anything — where material gets dropped and how far it's carried. It doesn't change the work itself. We'd rather see it before quoting so the time is in the number.

Does the flood history affect what you find in these houses?

Frequently, yes. On anything that took water, the damage tends to show up low and late — sill plates, joist ends, the bottoms of door frames and porch posts. It's worth checking those before assuming a problem is only cosmetic.

What porch repair in Matewan actually involves

Most people are buying a result, not a list of tasks. Pick a topic to see what we look at before quoting in Matewan.

More on porch repair work in Matewan

That's why we probe rather than eyeball on Matewan porches. A floor that feels solid can be carried by joists that have lost most of their bearing at the ends, and the only way to know is to get underneath and check the wood where it meets the pier.

Properties inside the floodwall and properties outside it are genuinely different situations, and so is anything built since. It's worth knowing which your house is before assuming what you're dealing with.
